News & Insights

Niche is pleased to announce our work on the Lake Victoria Wind Farm, a State Significant Development in Wentworth Shire, NSW with our client WestWind Energy.

Niche is providing a biodiversity offset strategy for this project as part of a broader offset strategy program for WestWind projects. This includes modelling of highest cost areas for avoidance opportunities, designed to identify solutions for retiring future offset liability in an effective and efficient manner that is best for the environment and for WestWind’s portfolio.

The Lake Victoria Wind Farm project has an estimated capacity of up to 1 gigawatt (GW), with up to 201 turbines, providing power for around 700,000 average homes annually.

The project is located on approximately 41,669 hectares of agricultural grazing and cropping land approximately 24 km northwest of Wentworth, NSW.

WestWind Head of Development – QLD & NSW, Shane Quinnell commented:

“We are excited to be developing Lake Victoria Wind Farm – a significant renewable energy project for NSW. Our focus on partnering with experts to deliver a strong biodiversity strategy for the project will ensure the best outcomes for the environment as we work to provide a substantial green energy solution for the state.”

Niche project lead, Simon Tweed, Manager – Natural Capital Strategy, commented:

“The Lake Victoria Wind Farm is a significant project contributing towards the renewable energy transition in NSW. Niche’s experts in the NSW Biodiversity Offset Scheme team will be working closely with WestWind to provide biodiversity advisory services to inform the best and most effective environmental outcome and ultimately minimise the project’s offset liabilities.”
