Mooball Telecommunication Tower –
Ecological Assessment

Client: Aurecon on behalf of Telstra
Industry sector: Telecoms infrastructure
Services: Ecology, Spatial Services
Location: Mooball, Northern NSW

About this Project

Aurecon engaged Niche to determine the suitability of a property for the proposed development of a telecommunications facility on behalf of Telstra. This development was deemed necessary to meet the growing demand for improved mobile and internet connectivity within the Tweed Heads region.

Our role in the project

Niche provided ecological services to identify biodiversity values present within the Project area. This was achieved through the completion of a desktop assessment, terrestrial habitat assessment, Koala feed tree identification and targeted Koala Spot Assessment Technique (SAT) surveys, a threatened flora and fauna likelihood of occurrence assessment, analysis of potential impacts and legislative triggers and recommendations to help avoid, minimise and mitigate impacts detailed within an Ecological Assessment Report.

“We worked with the client to optimise the Project’s scope and final outcomes for a successful development.”

Amelia Morling, Ecology Consultant, Niche

Ecology services across borders

The Niche ecology team serviced the reporting and legislative needs of the Project, which was assessed under NSW State legislation and Tweed Shire Council’s local planning scheme.

Substantial experience undertaking ecological assessments and reporting throughout QLD and NSW has fostered a diverse knowledge of the flora, fauna and ecosystems present within both regions. This expertise is what has allowed Niche’s ecologists to pursue dynamic works across state borders. Niche was able to confidently and effectively advise the client on ecological requirements and conclusions in accordance with NSW legislation at a standard which facilitated optimum project outcomes.

The advantages we delivered to this project

  • Experienced ecology consultants skilled in flora and fauna assessments.
  • Comprehensive understanding and application of interstate legislation.
  • High-level advice on legislative requirements surrounding potential Core Koala Habitat and Koala Primary Food trees.
