Meet the team: Jo Nelson, Associate Heritage Consultant NSW
Jo Nelson is a senior heritage consultant with nine years of extensive experience in Aboriginal cultural heritage and engagement, heritage legislation, built heritage, conservation principles and heritage assessment across NSW and QLD.
Jo project leads heritage management for infrastructure, roads, construction, mining, and government, undertaking multiple due diligence and archaeological heritage assessments, archival reporting and recording, and conservation works advice for cultural and built heritage in NSW and QLD. She has a comprehensive knowledge of statutory and non-statutory heritage legislation and can provide robust and relevant heritage advice for a diverse range of projects and clients.
To Jo, a good project outcome means “A nurtured and well-developed rapport and relationship with the client and client representatives, understanding what their project needs to navigate it through all heritage compliance obligations, and importantly working efficiently within the project budget.”
Get to know Jo:

Jo has worked at Niche since May 2022 and describes herself as enthusiastic and self-managed. Jo loves vacant old buildings, adaptive reuse conservation and, used to work in film. She has always been interested in history and archaeology, with this interest piqued through travelling for her film work to various historic locations, in Australia and overseas. When Jo isn’t working hard on her next project, she enjoys travel. “Before I go, I research places and their locations to understand and appreciate why they are the way they are.”
When asked to describe Niche, Jo noted, “Niche understands its capabilities and builds on these capabilities. The company is open to change in order to improve or become more resilient. In three words, Niche is capable, changeable and resilient.”
