Marika is an archaeologist specialising in stone artefact analysis. She has over eight years of experience conducting archaeological field research and lithic analyses for both the research and cultural resource management sectors. Her archaeological studies and fieldwork had taken her on adventures across Western Australia, Canada and South Africa.

Although Marika joined Niche less than a year ago, her association with the NSW heritage consulting team goes back many years.
“I decided to pursue a career in archaeology after being inspired by a stone tools course at Sydney University,” recalls Marika. “And I was lucky enough to have a great teacher who guided me into the industry and facilitated my early work experience with founding director and archaeologist Jamie Reeves, when Niche was in its very early days.”
Marika now happily combines her working life with her passion for rock climbing by living in the Blue Mountains, while working from home, her clients’ sites or Niche’s head office in Parramatta.
“My job is fast paced and varies day to day. I’m always switching between tasks including fieldwork, community consultation, report writing, and proposal and budget preparation. But my passion is lithics – I’m very excited about what comes out of the ground!”
“At Niche, I’ve been able to grow professionally and in particular to develop my knowledge and practical understanding of legislation and how it applies on the ground. I’m now confident in my ability to answer questions and to give my clients accurate advice.”
“It’s refreshing that our directors truly value work-life balance and – even at my first interview – were open to discussing flexible arrangements that would suit my needs.”
“I’ve been able to align my personal, study and career interests to my preferred lifestyle,” says Marika. “I’ve been climbing for six years and it is something I definitely want to do for the rest of my life.”
