It sounds too good to be true, but smart landholders in NSW are already making the most of opportunities associated with biodiversity offsetting and in some cases generating significant supplementary incomes from their land.
Generating an income with biodiversity offsetting
“Many private farming properties contain land that has little agricultural value but could contain biodiversity values that can generate an income,” explains Luke Baker, a biodiversity offsetting specialist and accredited assessor.
“Biodiversity offsetting is an innovative way to generate an additional income from the land, while providing positive outcomes for the environment.”
Opportunities for landholders
Landholders who are interested in finding out more can attend a free presentation on Saturday 2 March as part of the Hastings Sustainability Showcase. Luke will explain how NSW legislation allows forward-thinking landholders and developers to generate substantial economic returns from the sale of biodiversity offset credits from non-productive land, while retaining ownership and agricultural operations.
Luke’s presentation will include real examples and there will also be the opportunity to ask questions about opportunities specific to your own property.
Who should attend?
This presentation will be of interest to landholders with larger properties that contain at least 200ha of native vegetation that could be established as an environmental offset site. Farmers, land owners, council and government representatives, land managers and developers are encouraged to attend this free presentation.
